- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon almond extract (optional)
- Red, pink, blue food coloring (for icing)
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for icing)
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
- Cream butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and almond extracts in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Beat in egg one minute at a time until fully incorporated.
- Fold dry mixture into wet until dough forms; chill for 30 minutes.
- Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness, cut shapes, and bake 10–12 minutes.
- Cool cookies on a tray before icing.
- Prepare icing by whisking powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and color until spreadable.
- Pipe or spread icing onto cooled cookies.
- Let icing set for 15 minutes before storing.
